” When I’m done, the building is completely transformed in my head. My own photos surprise me every time”
When architectural photography is elevated to a form of art we see a fascinating symbiosis between the eye of the photographer, the vision of the architect, space, time and the deeper symbolic meaning of the building in culture. Hans van der Vliet is a visual artist whose can transcend an architecture photograph into a stunning emotional portrait of a building. He searches for a symbolic experience of the world, in the conviction that everything visible is a symbol of the invisible, which manifests itself within the limits of competition with reality. Hans’s work is an insightful expression of the mental state of his generation. Most of his subjects include architectural studies and character studies with multi-layered visual-structural research. His artwork is an archival algorithm that documents those parts of our habitat that we didn’t know existed. Hans van der Vliet is a master at creating independent, self-contained worlds full of melancholy and deep humor. His visual art transcends the need for words.
When I see an appealing building I walk around it several times; I want to feel and explain the flow of space through the building until I fully understand the essence of the structure. As a result, the building disintegrates into a puzzle of elements that touch my heart. Then I grab my camera. When I’m done, the building is completely transformed in my head. My own photos surprise me every time because of this. And the best compliments I get is that clients go back to the building because they saw a kind of beauty and power in my photos that they hadn’t noticed themselves, then I have done my job well. ‘
